I offer piano, flute, theory and composition lessons at home (in the west end of Darlington) and online via FaceTime and Skype. Aural training and development in sight reading skills are incorporated into lessons as a matter of course. Music theory tuition is also included in lessons unless the student actively doesn’t want to learn theory. I teach people of all ages from 6yrs upwards and people at every level, from beginners to advanced. Many of my pupils are adults who, again, range from those who are absolute beginners to those who are preparing for diplomas. I teach all styles of music (apart from improvised jazz) in piano and flute and also in the more theoretical components of music. Pupils take grade exams if they wish but I also teach those who just want to learn for pleasure. If a pupil chooses to do the grade exams I offer a choice of the ABRSM grades and the Trinity grades. I also offer theory and composition tuition by correspondence and by other ‘distance learning’ methods.
Theory tuition covers all the ABRSM grades, all theory required at diploma level, and the theoretical and compositional elements of GCSE and A level music. I teach melody writing, chord construction, chord symbols, harmony and counterpoint, figured bass, pastiche composition in addition to original composition (using both tonal and atonal methods), orchestration, and the history of music if required. I also offer help in essay writing.
